NHSEBAcademy is back and better for 2021-2022!

Last October, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched NHSEBAcademy as a new home for learning about and around the National High School Ethics Bowl. We take seriously the fact that much of the discussion, hard work, and learning which happens during an Ethics Bowl season predates Regional Competitions and the National Championship. NHSEBAcademy supports this preparation process with a variety of resources in various formats: print and graphic pedagogy materials in our Library, created and curated video content in our Theater, and a new series of events for the NHSEB community: NHSEBAcademy Live. We also piloted an experimental program called The Studio, which made UNC-based experts available on demand to the community for coaching assistance and formative feedback. Each of these initiatives were extremely successful, and have, in concert, reached over 1,000 NHSEB students, coaches, and other constituents. Building on these early successes, we have ambitious plans for this NHSEBAcademy in 2021-2022, and we’re very excited to begin rolling those out this week:

Expanded Studio Hours

After high demand for the initiative last year, we are expanding our offerings in The Studio. Starting on September 4, students from all across the country can book on demand Studio Hours with 12 of NHSEBAcademy’s specially-trained Studio Coaches. Thanks to an expanded partnership with the UNC Department of Philosophy, we have added additional Coaches with a variety of availability schedules to suit students from all time zones. Our Coaches are standing by to consult with participants on all things Ethics Bowl. Current appointment types include brainstorms about the recently released Regional Case Set, presentation consultations, commentary workshops, and practice Q+A sessions. Individual students and teams alike are encouraged to join in. Studio Hours are first come, first served, so book your appointment today!

NHSEBAcademy Live Events

After a terrific pilot year, NHSEBAcademy Live will continue to provide spaces for students to engage with subject-matter experts, facilitators highly trained in Ethics Bowl and Philosophy for Children pedagogies, and, of course, with other NHSEB participants from across the country. Academy Live events will occur periodically throughout the Fall and Winter, and will kick off for 2021-2022 later this month with two instances of our NHSEB Essentials Clinic: a modular workshop for students which isolates tasks and skills specific to Ethics Bowl matches, e.g., preparing a well-organized presentation, delivering a constructive and responsive commentary, and navigating tough questions from competitors and judges. These events have been carefully designed and will be administered by UNC Philosophy students in PHIL 292: Ethics Bowl and Democratic Deliberation. Clinics are scheduled for October 19 and 28 (both sessions are identical, and begin at 3:30pm ET). Registration is now available on the Academy website. We hope you’ll consider joining us!

New in 2021-2022: The Stadium

We’re excited to announce a new addition to NHSEBAcademy: The Stadium. You’ve asked, and we’ve listened. Ethics Bowl teams from across the country can now book scrimmage matches for practice purposes, administered via NHSEBOne. For each Stadium Scrimmage, the Parr Center will provide an expert Moderator and 3 Judges to offer formative feedback to students. Upon registration, teams will be paired with the first available school for a match. Schools which have more than one Ethics Bowl team may request to have those teams practice against each other. Scrimmage availability is limited, so book yours today!

We are so thrilled to welcome our community back to NHSEBAcademy’s “campus.” As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. We hope to see you very soon!
