Dear Coaches, Organizers, and Members of the NHSEB Community,

I write with unfortunate news. As you know, the outbreak of COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) has spread quickly around the United States in recent days, and is impacting the lives of many across the country and the world. The situation, and the CDC’s recommendation of greater “social distancing” to combat the virus’s spread, has led many universities to suspend their operations in favor of online alternatives for the foreseeable future.

As of tonight, I regret that I must inform you that the University of North Carolina has now joined those ranks. Effective immediately, UNC has suspended in-person classes in order to protect our students, faculty, and staff, and, out of an abundance of caution, has canceled all events and gatherings for more than 50 people. Therefore, in accordance with that guidance, and out of concern for the health and safety of our participants, coaches, and volunteers, the 2020 National High School Ethics Bowl, set to be held April 17-19, 2020, will be canceled.

I will, in the coming days, be meeting with my Executive Committee at the Parr Center for Ethics, as well as the newly-formed NHSEB Advisory Board, in order to discuss options for moving forward. However, given the uncertain and rapidly evolving nature of the COVID-19 situation, we do not currently have plans to reschedule the 2020 Nationals at this time.

While we are, of course, disappointed in this outcome, we maintain our commitment to acting in the best interest of our community. Your health and safety are our highest priority. We wish you all the best, and as always, invite you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Alex Richardson

Director, National High School Ethics Bowl
