The NHSEB Case Competition is here again! It offers high school students the opportunity to write cases for the National High School Ethics Bowl! All submitted cases will be considered for use in future National and Regional High School Ethics Bowl case sets with credit given, though only 3 will win prizes.
Grand prize: One case will be selected for a $500 prize.
Honorable mention: Two prizes of $250 will be awarded to other distinguished cases.
Who is eligible? All currently enrolled high school students in the United States.
Deadline: January 7, 2019
Winners announced: TBD, later in the spring semester
Guidelines: Submissions should follow the general format for NHSEB cases: a scenario, between 300 and 700 words long, that highlights a clear moral issue, is appropriate for high school students, and is written in a way that encourages civil disagreement and discourse. The case should be framed so that the central issue is clearly ethical. The NHSEB website has a searchable archive of previous NHSEB cases for guidance.
Students are allowed to submit up to three cases—whether as an individual or as part of a collaborative team. If a student submits more than one case, only one of the cases submitted under their name will be able to win a prize, whether the grand prize or an honorable mention. Collaborations among students are allowed, with due credit being given to all who contribute, so please include all authors’ names with your submission. However, submissions must be made by a single person who then takes responsibility for whether and how prize money will be distributed (and for the tax liability that comes with the prizes).
All submissions must be original, and properly cited excerpts may be used (a quote from a news source, for example). All submissions become the property of NHSEB and are eligible for inclusion in a future NHSEB case set, either in full or in part (including cases that are not selected as prize winners). Cases may be edited after being evaluated for the case competition, and thus may appear in a different form if and when included in a future case set.
Entries will be judged on their overall merit, the interest of the moral issue(s) in question, the quality of writing, and the suitability for use in a NHSEB competition.
To enter: Email your case, along with your name, age, school, state, and teacher’s name to Dominique Dery at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please use the subject: NHSEB Case Competition. Looking forward to hearing from you!
The 2018-2019 NHSEB Case Competition is sponsored by the Parr Center for Ethics.
